There are many ways to virtualize
and they all lead to greener, more
cost effective technology
  • Server virtualization
  • Storage virtualization
  • Network virtualization
  • Application virtualization
  • Desktop virtualization
The green benefits of virtualization:
  • Less floor space required
  • Lower cooling and power costs
  • Lower hardware costs
  • More cost effective use of storage
  • Lower management and maintenance costs
  • Less maintenance downtime
  • More cost effective provisioning of servers for development and testing

Server virtualization
Simply stated, virtualization software enables organizations to run multiple operating systems concurrently on a single physical server. The more powerful the server the more virtual machines it can host. This enables you to reduce the number of physical servers and other devices in your environment thereby greatly increasing efficiency and cutting operating costs. Consolidating resources through simple server virtualization can result in a reduction of up to 35% of total annual server costs (IDC survey, 2008).

Creating a virtualized IT environment provides the foundation for a dynamic infrastructure that allows rapid service delivery with security and effective disaster recovery capability. A distinct advantage is the ability to ensure optimum performance of the servers by ensuring that servers are running in the most efficient way – the ability to move virtual servers to a new physical host with no downtime.

Storage virtualization
Storage virtualization solutions enable resources to be allocated and delivered on demand, ensuring maximum service flexibility, performance, and availability. These solutions help clients store, safeguard, retrieve data, and ultimately scale storage for future growth. This makes information more readily available for business applications, regardless of changes to the physical infrastructure.

Network virtualization
Virtualization separates function from physical hardware. At the network level, this means that services that are normally delivered on separate servers, such as firewalls, VPNs, and load balancers, can be deployed on a single physical system, while still retaining all the best characteristics of discrete devices. Network virtualization makes it possible to monitor and manage an entire network from a single network administrator's console and creates a new level of effectiveness and efficiency.

Application virtualization
Application virtualization increases the availability, resiliency, scalability, and performance of applications in the virtual infrastructure. Application virtualization is a critical step toward creating a truly dynamic infrastructure. It increases flexibility and agility to ensure business process integrity, improves service, and enables better overall application management.
A dynamic infrastructure supported by application virtualization not only enables organizations to reduce operational and energy costs required to create, run and manage enterprise applications, but it also increases application performance, application availability and minimizes administration costs.

Desktop virtualization
Desktop virtualization offers new and powerful opportunities for IT to deliver and manage corporate desktops and to respond to various user needs in a flexible way. It provides users with remote and highly secure access to the desktop environment, more efficient utilization of resources, and the ability to manage applications and data centrally. Virtualized desktops are typically centralized on servers in the datacenter—often referred to as a virtual desktop infrastructure.
